Essence Short Fiction Contest

I am so entering the Essence Short Fiction Contest

ESSENCE is now accepting submissions for our 2004 Short Fiction Contest.

Join best-selling authors Terry McMillan, Gloria Naylor, Jill Nelson and others, whose short fiction first appeared in the pages of ESSENCE.

First Prize includes publication of the winning story in a fall 2004 issue of ESSENCE and $1,000.

First, Second, and Third Prize as well as seven honorable mentions will appear on ESSENCE.com in June.

CONTEST RULES AND GUIDELINES:

The contest is open to women and men who have never had a work of fiction published in a major commercial book, or magazine with a circulation of more than 25,000 and who are more than 18 years old at the time of entry.

Stories must be original fiction, featuring a Black adult female as the main character in a contemporary
setting. Entries must be typed, double-spaced, with one-inch margins, on one side of 8 1/2-by-11-inch
paper and not more than ten pages (2,500 words).

Send entries c/o 2004 ESSENCE Short Fiction Contest, Essence Magazine, 1500 Broadway, 5th Floor, New York, NY 10036.

All entries must be postmarked no later thanMarch 30, 2004.

Each contestant may submit one story. The author's name, mail and e-mail address and daytime telephone
number must appear in the top right-hand corner of the first manuscript page. All subsequent pages must be numbered in the top right-hand corner and include the author's last name. We will not accept faxes or e-mail attachments.

Winners will be selected by ESSENCE editors and a select panel of publishing experts appointed by ESSENCE. Winners will be notified by telephone or mail no later than June 14, 2004.

Entries will not be returned, and the author will be contacted only if her or his entry is chosen. Telephone, mail, e-mail or fax inquiries will not be accepted and could cause disqualification.

ESSENCE may withhold any award if the entries do not meet our publication standards. Stories selected may be edited for length and clarity. Employees of Essence Communications Partners, its subsidiaries and
affiliates and their relatives, are not eligible to enter.

Thanks for this MoMo. I don't get Essence anymore, but I am thinking of entering this contest.
